Procedure

To a solution of Compound 9a (243 mg, 0.344 mmol) in methanol (3.5 ml) is added a solution of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (35 mg, 0.834 mmol) in water (0.6 ml) and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 7 hr. After the addition of water, the mixture is washed with chloroform. After acidifying with 10% HCl, the mixture is extracted with chloroform containing 10% methanol. The extract is washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and distilled under reduced pressure to remove the solvent to obtain Compound 11a (224 mg, 94.1%).
