Procedure
A solution of hydroxylamine (1.33 mL, 50% in water) was added to a stirred solution of methyl 4-formyl-1-naphthalenecarboxylate (2.2 g, prepared as described in Journal of Medicinal Chemistry 2002, 45(26), 5755-5775) in methanol (50 mL). After stirring at room temperature for 2 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to provide the title compound as a pale yellow solid (2.55 g). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 8.93 (d, 1H), 8.86 (s, 1H), 8.41 (d, 1H), 8.14 (d, 1H), 7.82 (d, 1H), 7.63 (m, 2H), 4.02 (s, 3H).
