Procedure
To a stirred solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-((tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)amino)benzoate (1 g, 3.04 mmol) and propionaldehyde (0.354 g, 6.09 mmol) in dichloroethane (10 mL), acetic acid (1.12 g, 18.2 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. Then sodium triacetoxyborohydride (1.94 g, 9.14 mmol) was added at 0° C. and the reaction mixture stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The solvent was then removed under reduced pressure and water added to the residue. The mixture was extracted with DCM. The combined extracts were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the crude product which was purified by column chromatography to afford methyl 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-(propyl(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)amino)benzoate (0.96 g, 85.7%).
