Methyl 2-(3-tert-butylphenyl)piperidine-4-carboxylate (2.56 g, 9.30 mmol) was dissolved in DCM (100 mL) and DIPEA (2.429 mL, 13.94 mmol) added followed by methyl carbonochloridate (0.9 mL, 11.43 mmol) at 0° C. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The reaction mixture was washed with 1 M aq HCl (pH 4) followed by brine, satd NaHCO3. The organic phase was passed through a phase separator and evaporated to yield dimethyl 2-(3-tert-butylphenyl)piperidine-1,4-dicarboxylate (3.17 g, quant.) as a brown oil.
