Procedure
Methyl 2-phenylpiperidine-4-carboxylate (4.33 g, 19.75 mmol) was dissolved in DCM (150 mL) and DIPEA (3.78 mL, 21.72 mmol), then methyl carbonochloridate (1.710 mL, 21.72 mmol) was added. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 1 h 45 min. More DIPEA (1.720 mL, 9.87 mmol) and methyl carbonochloridate (0.777 mL, 9.87 mmol) were added and the reaction continued at room temperature for another 30 min. The reaction mixture was washed with 0.1 M HCl and satd NaHCO3. The organic phase was passed through a phase separator and evaporated to yield dimethyl 2-phenylpiperidine-1,4-dicarboxylate (5.88 g, quant.) as a yellow oil. MS m/z 278 (M+H)+
