Methyl 2-(4-fluorobenzyl)piperidine-4-carboxylate (4.981 g, 19.82 mmol) was dissolved in DCM (150 mL) and DIPEA (4.14 mL, 23.79 mmol), then methyl carbonochloridate (1.873 mL, 23.79 mmol) was added. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 50 min. More methyl carbonochloridate (a few drops) were added and the reaction continued at room temperature for 1 h. The reaction mixture was washed with 0.1 M HCl and satd NaHCO3. The organic phase was passed through a phase separator and evaporated to yield dimethyl 2-(4-fluorobenzyl)piperidine-1,4-dicarboxylate (5.82 g, 95%) as a yellow oil. MS m/z 310 (M+H)+
