Procedure
To a solution of benzyl 2-(6-fluoro-5-nitro-1H-indol-2-yl)-2-methylpropanoate (18.0 g, 0.05 mol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) was added DIBAL-H (12 mL) at −78° C. The mixture was stirred for 1 h at that temperature and was warmed to room temperature. The reaction was quenched with water and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (100 mL×3). The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, the solvent was evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel (10% EtOAc in petroleum ether) to give 2-(6-fluoro-5-nitro-1H-indol-2-yl)-2-methylpropan-1-ol (10.0 g, 77%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) 9.37 (s, 1 H), 8.32 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 1 H), 7.11 (d, J=11.7 Hz, 1 H), 6.36 (s, 1 H), 3.73 (d, J=5.1 Hz 2 H), 1.97 (t, J=5.1 Hz, 1 H), 1.39 (s, 6 H).
