To a solution of bicyclic alcohol 43 (6.5 g, 17.9 mmol) in DCM (20 mL) at 0° C. was added 4N HCl/1,4-dioxane (20 mL, 80 mmol) and the reaction mixture was slowly warming to ambient temperature. After 90 min, an additional portion of 4N HCl/1,4-dioxane (20 mL) was added. After 3 h, the reaction mixture was diluted with toluene and concentrated in vacuo. The crude 52 (HCl salt) was used in the next step without further purification. Mass spectrum, m/z [262.5] (M+H)+.
