Procedure
To a solution of 3-(difluoromethyl)-2-methylpyridine (2.56 g, 17.9 mmol) in dichloromethane was added 3-chloroperbenzoic acid (6.01 g, 26.8 mmol) at ambient temperature. After stirring for 2 h, the mixture was diluted with a 1 M aqueous sodium hydroxide (50 mL) and extracted with dichloromethane (4×50 mL). The organic phase was washed with brine (150 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 3-(difluoromethyl)-2-methylpyridine-1-oxide as a yellow oil (2.22 g, 78%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ8.36 (d, J=6.5 Hz, 1H), 7.40 (d, J=7.9 Hz, 1H), 7.23 (m, 1H), 6.80-6.70 (m, 1H), 2.57 (s, 3H).
