Procedure
Ethyl (2E)-3-(4-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)-2-propenoate D141 (0.500 g, 2.126 mmol), iron (0.593 g, 10.63 mmol) and ammonium chloride (0.057 g, 1.063 mmol) in ethanol (11 mL) and water (2 mL) was heated at reflux for 2 hours. The mixture was cooled and filtered through a pad of kieselguhr. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water and dried (MgSO4). Filtration and evaporation of solvent afforded a bright yellow solid (0.417 g, 96%).
