Procedure
The procedure was the same as that for 7c except that 800 mg (0.0024 mol) of 2, 160 mg of NaOCH3, and 400 mg of 5-chloro-1-methyl-4-nitroimidazole were used. The product obtained by crystallization from MeOH--H2O was dried over Drierite in vacuo at the temperature of refluxing toluene for 2 hr. to yield 1.0 g (91%) of 3c: mp 148° softens to a glass.
