Procedure
To a solution of 1 g of 7-(1-imidazolyl)-1-n-propylquinoxaline-2,3-(1H,4H)-dione hydrochloride in 8 ml of sulfuric acid was added 0.4 g of potassium nitrate, and the mixture was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was poured in ice-water and adjusted to pH 7. The resulting crystals were recrystallized from 1N-hydrochloric acid to provide 0.9 g of 7-(1-imidazolyl)-6-nitro-1-n-propylquinoxaline-2,3-(1H,4H)-dione hydrochloride.
