5'-Chloro-N-ethyl-4'-fluoro-2'-nitroacetanilide (74 g, 0.284 mmol) is treated with N-methylpiperazine (126 ml, 1.13 mol) and the solution obtained is stirred at 60° for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is evaporated, the residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate (250 ml) and washed in succession with water (3×100 ml) and 10 percent sodium chloride solution (100 ml). The organic solution is dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated. The residue is recrystallized from ethyl acetate/n-hexane. There are obtained 72.3 g (78.5%) of N-ethyl-4'-fluoro-5'-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-2'-nitroacetanilide with a m.p. of 117°-119°.
