In a dry 100 mL 3-neck flask, equipped with a magnetic stirrer, was placed 5 mL of the replacement solvent to be investigated. To this was added hexamethyldisilazide (HMDS, 0.360 mL, 1.17 mmol). The mixture is cooled to 0° C. and n-butyl lithium was added in a 1:1 mole ratio. The reaction is stirred (ca. {fraction (1/2)}h) to obtain lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LHMDS).
