Procedure
A mixture of 4-methylsulfonylphenol (2.93 g, 17 mmol) and 4-chloropyridine hydrochloride (2.93 g, 19.5 mmol) was heated at 150° C., resulting in a gradual melt, which was stirred at 150° C. for 4 hours, then partitioned between ethyl acetate and 1N NaOH. The organic extract was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to 1.3 g of a yellow solid. The solid was recrystallized from ethyl acetate-ether to give 0.81 g of the desired product as a white solid.
