To a solution of 193.69 g of ethyl 5-thia-1,8b-diazaacenaphthylene-4-carboxylate in 1 liter of ethanol was added a solution of 62.9 g (1.57 mol.) of sodium hydroxide in 50 mL of water. The mixture was stirred for 0.5 hour at room temperature. To the reaction mixture was added about 130 mL of conc. hydrochloric acid while stirring until the pH became about 4-5. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration. which was washed with ethanol, acetone and diethyl ether successively to give 5-thia-1,8b-diazaacenaphthylene-4-carboxylic acid.
