Procedure
To a suspension of 2.2 g of ethyl 5-thia-1,8b-diazaacenaphthylene-4-carboxylate in methanol (6.6 ml) was added 1N-aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (13 ml), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. This reaction mixture was adjusted to pH 5 with 1N-hydrochloric acid under ice-cooling. Then, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The resulting crystal cropwas harvested by filtration and dried to provide 5-thia-1,8b-diazaacenaphthylene-4-carboxylic acid (1.8 g, 94%).
