A mixture of t-butyl 6-chloronicotinate (4.69 g, 0.0220 mol) and (R)-3-amino-1,2-propanediol (5.00 g, 0.0549 mol) in isopropanol (20 ml) was heated at 100° C. overnight. Solvent was removed under vacuum, and the residue taken up in ethyl acetate, washed with water, brine, dried (MgSO4), and evaporated to give nearly pure product as a yellow oil. Yield 5.90 g (99%). 1H NMR. MS: 269 [M+H]+.
