Procedure
A solution of 0.95 moles of 2,5-hexanedione, 0.95 mole of diglycolamine, and 1.4 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid in 400 ml of toluene was refluxed in a flask fitted with a Dean-Stark trap. After removal of the required amount of water, distillation yielded 157 g of N-(hydroxyethoxyethyl)-2,5-dimethylpyrrole with b.p.=110° C. at 13 mm.
