Procedure

N-(4-benzoyl-5-methyl(1H)-pyrrol-3-yl)2-chloroacetamide (0.019 mole) was dissolved in butan-2-one (60 ml) and K2CO3 (4.5 g) and dimethylsulphate (0.037 mole) were added to the obtained solution. The reaction mixture was maintained at the reflux temperature for 5 hours and at room temperature overnight. An inert atmosphere was maintained throughout the process. The inorganic salts were filtered and the clear solution was evaporated under vacuum to yield a residue which upon crystallization from methanol gave the compound of the title.
