Procedure

To a stirred solution of 100 g (0.25 mole) of the title product of Example 1 in 827 ml of acetic acid was added 413 ml (2.5 mole) of 6.07N hydrogen chloride in dioxane. After about thirty minutes the solution was concentrated in vacuo to a viscous oil. Trituration with diethyl ether afforded a solid which was collected by filtration, washed with diethyl ether, and air dried. Repetition of the trituration with diethyl ether afforded the title compound as an analytically pure solid. [α]D +47.5°; [α]365 +186.3° (methanol).
