Procedure

A mixture of 15.0 g 3,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethyl-2-[(phenylmethoxy)methyl]-2H-pyran, 1.75 g liquid hydrogen cyanide, and 0.1 g pyridine sealed in a 30 ml glass bomb was kept at 150° C. for 16 hours. The resulting dark brown solution was distilled (Kugelrohr) to give 15.7 g colorless product, bp 112°-118° C. (0.01 torr), as an isomeric mixture, ca 4:6, cis:trans, based on NMR spectrum in CDCl3.
