6-t-Butoxycarbonylamino-4-N-(carbomethoxymethyl)-perhydro-1,4-thiazepin-5-one (0.53 g) is dissolved in 2 ml of trifluoroacetic acid. At the end of one hour at room temperature the trifluoroacetic acid is removed under vacuum. The residue is partitioned between water and ether. The aqueous layer is washed three more times with ether, and then lyophilized to yield the product as a white solid (0.52 g).
