Procedure
Employing a procedure similar to that described in Example 27, part B above, 6.1 g of 2-(2-methoxy-4'-dimethylaminobenzhydryl)-5-dimethylaminobenzoic acid was oxidized with hydrogen peroxide to obtain 1.05 g of 3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-6-dimethylaminophthalide (Formula I: R=CH3 ; X=H; Y=2-CH3OC6H4 ; Z=4-(CH3)2NC6H4), a light yellow-colored solid which melted at 215°-216° C.
