A mixture of toluene-4-sulfonic acid 2-[1-(4-methyl-benzyl)-2-oxo-3-propyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazol-4-yl]-ethyl ester (0.079 g, 0.184 mmol), 3-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-2-methoxy-2-methyl-propionic acid ethyl ester (0.038 g, 0.169 mmol) and K2CO3 (0.047 g, 0.340 mmol) in EtOH (8 mL) was heated at 75° C. under N2 for 16 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and quenched with aqueous 1 N HCl (1 mL). The solvent was removed in vacuo to give a residue that was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to afford crude product that was purified by flash chromatography using a 2:1 hexanes:acetone to afford 0.036 g (44%) 2-methoxy-2-methyl-3-(4-{2-[1-(4-methyl-benzyl)-2-oxo-3-propyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-imidazol-4-yl]-ethoxy}-phenyl)-propionic acid ethyl ester.
