The product from Step 5 (2.5 g, 7.99 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) and 2 N hydrochloric acid (16 mL) was treated portionwise with NaNO2 (1.10 g, 16 mmol) and allowed to stir at rt for 1 h. The resulting tan precipitate was filtered and washed with methanol to give the title compound (2.7 g, 99%). MS (ES+) m/e 342/344 [M+H]+.
