Potassium tert-butoxide (13.0 g, 0.116 mol) and ethyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (41.6 g, 0.112 mol) were added to a solution of 2,2,7,7-tetramethyltricyclo[6.2.1.01,6]undecan-5-one (1, 20.0 g, 0.091 mol) in cyclohexane (200 ml), the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 78 h and filtered through Celite®. The filtrate was concentrated and distilled under reduced pressure to give (at 95° C./0.1 mbar) 5-ethylidene-2,2,7,7-tetramethyltricyclo[6.2.1.01,6]undecane (2b, 13.1 g, 62% yield, colourless liquid).
