tert-Butyl lithium (1.7 M in pentane, 0.5 mL) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-methylpyridine (0.050 g) in THF (0.5 mL) cooled to −70° C. under argon. The mixture was stirred at −70° C. for 10 minutes and 1,1,1-trifluoro-4-(5-fluoro-2-methoxyphenyl)-4-methylpentan-2-one (0.080 g) (Example 1) in THF (0.5 mL) was added over 1 minute. The reaction mixture was stirred for 5 minutes and then quenched with MeOH. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue fractionated directly by preparative layer chromatography on silica gel (methylene chloride-hexanes (1:1)) to give the 57 mg of the title compound, m.p. 94° C.-96° C.
