Procedure

A solution of 2-[3-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]ethyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (0.20 g, 0.44 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (2.5 mL) was added sodium azide (0.14 g, 2.2 mmol) and heated to 100° C. for 6 hours. The mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and H2O, and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (10 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (1×15 mL), dried (MgSO4), filtered concentrated under reduced pressure. Silica gel chromatography (40% Ethyl acetate/petroleum ether) gave the azide as a clear glass (0.13 g, 86%) which was used directly in the next step.
