Part B: Synthesis of 3-carboxymethyl-3H-benzoimidazol-1-ium trifluoro-acetate tert-Butyl 1H-benzimidazol-1-ylacetate (110 mg, 0.47 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (3 mL) and trifluoroacetic acid (1 mL) was added. The reaction was stirred at ambient temperature for 24 h and the solvents were removed to afford 3-carboxymethyl-3H-benzoimidazol-1-ium trifluoro-acetate (136 mg, 100%). Mass spectrum (ESI) m/z: 177.0. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CD3OD) δ ppm 5.3 (s, 2H), 7.5 (m, 2H), 7.8 (m, 2H), 9.4 (s, 1H).
