A suspension of N-(2-bromoethyl)-4-cyanobenzenesulfonamide (5 g, 0.017 mol; see step (i) above), 9-oxa-3,7-diaza-bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (3.96 g, 0.0173 mol; see WO 01/28992) and potassium carbonate (3.6 g, 0.025 mol) in acetonitrile (50 mL) was stirred at 60° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was filtered and the solvent concentrated under reduced pressure to yield the crude product, which was purified by column chromatography (using methanol in chloroform as the eluent) to yield (5 g) of the sub-title compound as pale yellow solid.
