3-Methyl-6-(methyloxy)-1-{[(methyloxy)methyl]oxy}-2-phenylnaphthalene (15) (1.31 g, 4.25 mmol) was dissolved in HCl (4 N in 1,4-dioxane) (10 mL) and the solution was stirred at RT under N2 for 30 min. The reaction mixture was concentrated to give 1.83 g of crude 3-methyl-6-(methyloxy)-2-phenyl-1-naphthalenol (7) as a gold-yellow oil. Compound (7) was previously characterized and used directly in the following reaction without additional purification.
