Procedure

To an ice-cooled solution of sodium hydroxide (2.34 g, 58.6 mmol) in water (17.0 mL) was added benzaldehyde (0.746 g, 7.03 mmol) and then a solution of 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (1.00 g, 5.86 mmol) in methanol (17.0 mL). The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, and it was stirred for 24 hours. The bulk of the organic solvent was removed by evaporation in vacuo. The aqueous residue was extracted with EtOAc (3×30 mL). The combined extracts were washed with water (50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated to dryness in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in a minimum volume of CH2Cl2, and n-pentane was added which resulted in precipitation. The obtained suspension was filtered and the precipitate was washed with little cold pentane, and dried in vacuo to afford Compound (XVI) (695 mg, 46%) as an orange solid.
