Procedure

1,1-Dimethylethyl 4-[5-[[methyl[(1R)-1-phenylethyl]amino]carbonyl]-2-thiazolyl]-1-piperazinecarboxylate (i.e. the product of Example 4, Step C) (0.75 g, 1.7 mmol) in 10 mL of methanol and 10 mL of dichloromethane was treated with 15 mL of 1 N HCl in ether. The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature overnight, concentrated under reduced pressure, dissolved in water and brine, basified with 1. N aqueous NaOH solution and extracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 0.48 g of the title compound as a yellow oil.
