A solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl 4-[4-(ethoxycarbonyl)-2-thiazolyl]-1-piperazinecarboxylate (1.0 g, 3.4 mmol) (i.e. the product of Example 30, Step A) in 10 mL of dichloromethane was treated with 2 M hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether (10 mL) and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h. The resulting mixture was evaporated in vacuo to give 1.0 g of the title compound as a white solid. This compound was of sufficient purity to use in subsequent reactions.
