To a mixture of 2-(3-bromo-phenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (4.0 g, 10.3 mmol), 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (2.5 g, 15.4 mmol) and tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (1.2 g, 1.1 mmol) in dioxane (10 mL) was added 2 M sodium carbonate solution in water (10 mL, 20 mmol). The resulting mixture was subjected to microwave irradiation for 60 min at 110° C. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (150 mL), washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (30 mL×2), brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and then concentrated in vacuo. Purification by flash silica gel chromatography (silica gel from QingDao, 200-300 mesh, glass column from Shanghai SD company) (10% ethyl acetate/hexanes) afforded 2-(4′-carboxy-biphenyl-3-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.4 g, 80%) as a white solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C27H27NO4 (M+H)+: 430.52, observed: 430.1.
