Procedure
(E)-3-{1′-(2-Phenyl-ethyl)-4-oxo-spiro[chromane-2,4′-piperidine]-6-yl}-acrylic acid methyl ester (1.70 g, 4.19 mmol) was dissolved in acetic acid (20 ml). 6 M HCl (20 ml) was added and the resulting suspension was heated at 85° C. for 4 h, then the solvents were evaporated and the residue was dried under vacuum, giving (E)-3-{1′-(2-phenyl-ethyl)-4-oxo-spiro[chromane-2,4′-piperidine]-6-yl}-acrylic acid (1.73 g) as a light yellow solid (hydrochloride salt).
