To a solution of 2-(2,5-dichloro-phenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid methyl ester (1.0 g, 2.8 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (8 mL) and methanol (8 mL) was added 3N sodium hydroxide (5 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 4 hours, and then diluted with water (10 mL), extracted with diethyl ether (20 mL). The organic layer was discarded. The aqueous layer was acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid to pH 4 and extracted with ethyl acetate (40 mL×3), and the combined organics were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4. The solvent was removed in vacuo and purified by preparative HPLC to afford 2-(2,5-dichloro-phenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (600 mg, 61.4%) as a yellow foam.
