2-(3-Fluorophenoxy)benzeneacetic acid (22 g.) was added to 90 g. of polyphosphoric acid at 125°. The reaction mixture was stirred 1 hour at 125°. It was then cooled; water (300 ml) was added with stirring; a solid product was filtered and extracted with toluene several times. The combined toluene extracts were washed successively with water, dilute alkali, and water, then dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to yield the title compound as a solid product, which was purified upon treatment with hexane. ##STR15##
