Procedure
A reaction mixture containing 28 g. of 3-amino-5-(4-pyridinyl)-2(1H)-pyridinone and 200 ml. of 97% formic acid was heated on a steam bath for three hours, cooled and the excess formic acid distilled-off under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water and the aqueous solution was made alkaline with ammonium hydroxide. The precipitated product was collected, washed with water, dried, recrystallized from dimethylformamide, washed with ether and dried to yield 26 g. of N-[1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-5-(4-pyridinyl)-3-pyridinyl]formamide, m.p. 299°-300° C. with decomposition.
