To a stirred solution of 70 parts of 1,3-dihydro-1-(1-methylethenyl)-3-{3-[4-(phenylmethyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl}-2H-benzimidazol-2-one in 240 parts of ethanol are added 55 parts of a hydrochloric acid solution 6 N. The whole is stirred for 2 hours at 40°-50° C. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is taken up in a diluted ammonium hydroxide solution. The oily product is extracted with trichloromethane. The extract is dried, filtered and evaporated, yielding 1,3-dihydro-1-{3-[4-(phenylmethyl)-1-piperazinyl]propyl}-2H-benzimidazol-2-one as a residue.
