cis-2-Azidomethyl-3-t-butoxycarbonylamino-4-oxoazetidine (ca. 1 g) is dissolved in 2 ml of methylene chloride and the solution is cooled to 0° and treated with 0.5 ml of trifluoroacetic acid for 30 minutes at 0°. The solution is washed with 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate and extracted with dilute hydrochloric acid. The aqueous phase is neutralized and extracted with ethyl acetate. Evaporation of the solvent gives the title compound.
