Procedure

The tetrahydropyranyl ether prepared in stage (i) (0.2 g), was dissolved in methanol (6 cm3), and to the stirred solution was added concentrated hydrochloric acid (several drops). After stirring for 6 hours, and standing for a further 14 hours, the reaction mixture was poured into water, and extracted into ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and brine, dried, and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure to give 4-(2-chloroprop-2-en-1-yl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol as an orange oil (0.15 g).
