15 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid are added to a solution of 10.00 g (0.034 mol) of 4-acetyl-11-chloro -1,2,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-4-benzazecine-3,8-dione in 90 ml of 5-nonanol and 50 ml of methylene chloride and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The solution is concentrated, extracted with methylene chloride/water, dried with magnesium sulfate and the solvent is distilled in a vacuum. Chromatography on silica gel with ethyl acetate gives 1-butylpenty 1 2-(4-acetamido-butyryl) -5-chlorohydrocinnamate as a yellow oil.
