Reaction Steps
A solution of 21 g of 4 in 200 ml ethanol was hydrogenated in the presence of 2 g 5% Pd on carbon. After the take-up of hydrogen was complete, the catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate evaporated. This yielded 21 g of colourless oil; Rf =0.42 (hexane/ethyl acetate 9/1).
