Procedure
A mixture of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-2,4,6-cycloheptatrien-1-one (described above, 13 g), potassium carbonate (23.6 g), dimethyl sulfate (21.6 g) and 2-butanone (130 ml) is heated at reflux for 3 hours. The mixture is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated. The residue is subjected to chromatography on silica gel using acetone-ethyl acetate (1:1) and evaporation of the eluates gives 2,4-dimethoxy-2,4,6-cycloheptatrien-1-one and 2,6-dimethoxy-2,4,6-cycloheptatrien-1-one.
