To a stirring solution of 4-[2-methanesulfonyl-6-(3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-pyrimidin-4-yl]-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (720 mg) in dimethyl sulphoxide (17 ml) was added sodium cyanide (72.5 mg). The resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 24 hrs. After diluting with ethyl acetate (100 ml), then washed with water (4×50 ml), brine (50 ml), dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residual solid was columned on silica gel using heptane and ethyl acetate (2:1) as eluant to give a white solid (230 mg).
