N-(2-Benzoyl-4-vinylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide (b) (0.32 g, 1.0 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of methanol (38 mL) and water (2.3 mL) and potassium carbonate (0.7 g, 5 mmol) was added. After stirring overnight at room temperature, the mixture was concentrated. Water (20 mL) was added to the residue and the mixture was extracted with chloroform (3×50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel [hexanes:ethyl acetate (9:1)] to produce 2-amino-5-vinylbenzophenone (c) (0.2 g, 90%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.70-7.60 (m, 2H), 7.60-7.40 (m, 5H), 6.72 (d, J=10 Hz, 1H), 6.65 (dd, J=11, 19.6 Hz, 1H), 6.16 (s, br, 2H), 5.56 (d, J=19.6 Hz, 1H), 5.03 (d, J=11 Hz,1H). MS: 224.2 (M+H).
