Reaction Steps

A mixture of 3-benzyl-1-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone (Method 5; 0.70 g, 2.68 mmol) and 2 M NaOH (4 ml) was stirred in ethanol (10 ml) for 24 hours. The mixture was evaporated in vacuo and the residue acidified. The product was collected by filtration and dried under high vacuum. NMR (90 MHz, CDCl3) 7.9 (s, 1H), 7.2 (in, 5H), 4.1 (d, 1H), 3.3 (m, 2H), 2.25 (m, 2H), 2.3-1.6 (m, 4H).
