Procedure

7.15 gm of 11-chloroacetyl-5,11-dihydro-6H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]benzodiazepin-6-one, 2.9 gm of potassium carbonate and 4.5 gm of 1-(2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-piperazine were refluxed for 5 hours in 100 ml of absolute ethanol. Then, the hot reaction mixture was suction filtered. The crystals which precipitated out of the filtrate were then recrystallized from isopropanol in the presence of activated charcoal.
